In 1928 she came to Canada with her parents John Ernest and Lillian Brown and siblings; Gladys, Inez, John and Phil. Joan and her family settled on a farm a couple miles west of Leslie. The family managed to adapt to the drastic change in lifestyle, schools, and chilly Saskatchewan winter weather. Coming to Saskatchewan proved positive for Joan, she met Walter, the young man on the neighboring farm, who became her life partner. They made their home on the farm, down the road from her family. Joan was active in the Leslie United Church, Leslie Ladies Aid, Legion Auxiliary, and co-leading Explorers and High Cs. Joan always found time to help in the curling rink lunch counter and hauled mountains of food and dishes to the hall for Leslies famous fowl suppers. Despite her busy schedule she would always lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors when needed. Reading, sewing, knitting and crossword puzzles were some of her hobbies that she loved. Sewing and knitting for craft shows and helping out at the craft tables filled a great deal of time in her retirement years, until her vision began to fail and limited her sewing and knitting. But Joan would never be beat, she then focused on audio books and a bigger TV screen! In this busy life Joan found time to center on her family, Walter, Lillian, Beverly and extended family. She always had time to listen, help with homework or a project, drive somewhere, make a great meal or serve a delicious piece of cake and a cup of coffee. When grandkids arrived, Robin, Ryan, Kevin and Maria, she continued to have time for stories or patching a skinned knee and sleepovers. Family, both immediate and extended, were loved and often thought of. Her move to Saskatoon in 2008 was a big step. She left the Leslie, Foam Lake area which she loved so much. However, she soon settled into condo life in Saskatoon and had numerous friends in her building that she visited and had tea with. Joan lived a busy, full life, surrounded by family that loved and admired her. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by daughters Lillian (Leslie) Soonias, Beverly Ireland, grandchildren; Robin (Nick), Ryan (Lesley), Kevin (Monika), Maria (Adnan), sister in law, Eleanor Brown and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and dear friends.
