She was 101 years old. The daughter of John James Lenzen and his wife Lillian Foottit, Evy was born on November 17, 1918 in a farm house near Tugaske, Saskatchewan. After a disastrous hail storm, the family moved to Regina, then in 1932, to Nut Mountain. Evy attended Omar School, where she finished Grade 10. On April 16, 1936, she married Fritz Althouse. They resided on a farm southwest of Nut Mountain. Over the course of 25 years, they were blessed with 7 children. The family worked together to expand the farm and to build a good life. On Evy’s birthday in 1958 they moved to a bigger house on “the Marshall farm”, less than a mile from the old Omar School site. Over the years, Evy worked both in the house and on the farm. Highly organized and efficient, she managed her large family with humour and kindness. To keep up with all the chores, Evy posted a chore list on the fridge for the kids, changing up each person’s jobs and working partner each week. She found joy in nature, took pride in a job well done, and found ways to make work fun. Weeding the garden or picking stones and roots might find her singing with the kids and teaching them rounds and harmonies. A natural teacher, she encouraged curiosity and learning; she valued reading and education. Evy read every day, often having more than one book on the go. She was a woman of many creative talents. Most of the girls’ clothes were expertly “made over” on her treadle sewing machine. Massive batches of bread, pies and Christmas candies were turned out in her kitchen. Besides the huge vegetable garden that fed the family, Evy loved to grow flowers. She loved the animals on the farm. She took time to stop and point out the beauty of a sunset. Her energy level dwarfed that of people half her age. Always active, she went for walks, played ball with the kids and went tobogganing down the ravine—even into her eighties. Her home was always open to visitors. When people stopped by—and they often did— she welcomed them, fed and entertained them. Nephews, nieces and grandchildren loved to spend summers at the farm. Fritz and Evy made occasional trips to Vancouver to visit Evy’s parents and siblings, and a few visits to relatives in the States, but for many years summers were spent making hay and following the chuckwagon and chariot circuits with the racing ponies. The tailgate of their truck with its camp stove was as welcoming to visitors as Evy’s kitchen at home. In October of 2000 Fritz and Evy moved into Kelvington. Fritz passed away in 2001 at the age of 91. Evy stayed in her little white house, adapting to living in town, making new friends, joining committees, and learning to use a computer. She travelled by bus to visit relatives throughout the west, toured the Grasslands with a granddaughter and visited her son in Yellowknife. As her eyesight deteriorated, she moved into the Villa where she enjoyed the sense of community and the activities. When she was on her own, she listened to audio books provided through the CNIB. She continued to have many visitors. The community remembers her as kind and positive, with a quick but gentle sense of humour. In 2016, at age 98, Evy fell, breaking her wrist and cracking her femur. Requiring more care, she moved first to the Red Deer Lodge in Porcupine Plain for 3 months, then to a newly renovated space at Kelvindell Lodge when it opened on December 21, 2016. The staff often commented on her ever-present smile and her unfailing optimism. Her spirit is gone but she has left a bit of light and inspiration in every life she touched. Evy was predeceased by her husband Frederick Carl (Fritz) Althouse; her daughter Louise Nykiforuk; her brothers Raymond, Dennison and Ernest Lenzen; and her grandson Patrick Althouse. Evy is survived by her sisters, June Lenzen and Rosalie Tully; her children Victor (Cicely) Althouse, James (Bernice) Althouse, Dorothy Hunchak, Ruth (Eugene) Chorney, Betty Althouse (Miles Jorgenson) and Dennis (Annette) Althouse; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter; many nephews and nieces and friends; as well as Patricia (Bielka) Thorneloe and Margaret (Bielka) McLennon, who also called her “Mom”. Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m Tuesday, October 20, 2020 Private family service will be held. Due to COVID-19
