Obituary
A Funeral Service for Wilhelmena will be held at a later date. Wilhelmina Johanna (Miep) Frietman was born in Rotterdam, Holland on March 7, 1927. She was one of 12 children born to Antonius and Wilhelmina Frietman, a postal worker and a homemaker. Early childhood for Miep was good. She attended Catholic school, helped her mother with household chores and enjoyed bicycle rides in the country. She also helped to care for her younger siblings, and youngest brother Frans became her special charge. Upon completion of grade school, Miep attended a technical college where she learned every aspect of a seamstresses trade. This would stand her in good stead as she later sewed many, many outfits for her children and later quilts for her children and grandchildren. When WWII broke out in 1939, Miep's life changed in many ways. The occupation of Holland meant a scarcity of food; especially for her large family. Some of the children including Miep were boarded at farm homes in the hopes of better nutrition. The biggest event of the war for Miep was meeting her future husband Eric Walter. They were to meet and fall in love on a blind date, even though they were only there as chaperones for Miep's sister and another Canadian serviceman, who by the way, never dated again! After the end of the war and Eric's return to Canada, the two sweethearts corresponded for two years while Eric found work and could finally purchase a ticket for Miep to cross the ocean to Canada on a ship called the Waterman. Miep and Eric were married in a small Anglican Church in Saskatoon on July 5, 1947. They then had a family celebration a few days later in the Valley Plain area of Quill Lake where Eric was raised and Miep could meet some of Eric's family. Eric and Miep began their married life in Strasbourg, Sask. where Eric began a career working for the Cooperative Movement. They also lived in Mankota, Sask. and Foam Lake, Sask., before settling in Wynyard. Miep's busy family life and poor health did not allow for large community involvement but Miep did what she could for St. Margaret's Anglican Church, the children's organized activities and her friends and neighbors. Miep was an excellent cook and baker, always ready to try new recipes. She sewed, knitted, crotcheted and did needlepoint and other handcrafts. Many of her beautiful creations still adorn the walls of family and friends. She was an avid reader, a love which she passed on to all of her children. The family enjoyed summer camping and fishing holidays, usually along the Hanson Lake road or to BC. Miep and Eric grew a huge garden as well as berries and fruit trees on their acreage just west of Wynyard. No one ever went hungry at Miep's house, as the wonderful homecare ladies who would later assist Miep, can all attest to. Miep passed away peacefully on January 15, 2017, with family at her side, just 2 months short of her 90th birthday. She was a strong and courageous lady whose quality of life had deteriorated, and she knew it was time to move on. Miep was predeceased by her husband Eric in 2009. She is survived by her children Larry (Phyllis) Walter, Barb (Grant) Henry, Deb (Neil) Dunville, Yvonne (Colin) Walter, Brian (Leatha) Walter, and Sheri (Dale) Johnston. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and her brothers Gerrard and Frans Frietman and sister Reit in Holland. A date for Miep's memorial service will be arranged in the spring. The family is deeply grateful to the homecare ladies who gave their dedicated care and friendship to Miep. We also sincerely thank the staff at Golden Acres, who for the past 3 1/2 years helped to make a safe and comfortable home for Mom.
