If unable to join the family remotely please go to www.narfasons.com Stephen ‘Leo’ Eberts was born to John and Cecilia Eberts on Feb. 7, 1928 in Qu'Appelle Sk. His family farmed, but that wasn't the life for Leo. He did very well in school and following his formal education, he joined the Canadian Navy. This decision allowed him to be at sea and visit many areas of the world. In 1954, he was honourably discharged after serving for 5 years and married his first wife, Helena. Leo worked for Sask. Gov’t , Department of Highways, first as a surveyor, then as a draftsman. Helena became ill and died in 1972. After being transferred from Saskatoon to Regina, he met Terry Baker on a blind date in 1976. They were married August 20, 1977. Leo instantly became the step-father of 2 daughters and three months later became a grandfather. He was a good step-father who taught the girls many life lessons, for example, after buying Mariette a new car he insisted on teaching her how to change a tire. He was very generous. After traveling in the navy and seeing so many unfortunate people he understood how lucky he was! He donated generously to many charities. Both Leo and Terry retired in the late 1970’s and began to travel. With their camper hitched up they toured Canada and the USA extensively. Eventually, they bought a small home in Alamo, Texas where they enjoyed 12 winters. In 1998 they bought a new condo and moved from Regina to Wynyard to be closer to kids and grand-kids. This did not stop their travelling. They continued to pull their trailer visiting family and friends. It also served as a free hotel room when they went to polka fests nearly every weekend. They enjoyed this activity for many years, well into their 70’s. It was no surprise that dancing was a big part of Leo’s life as he was very musical. He played the guitar and mouth organ and owned a number of other instruments. He played in a band at one time and sang in multiple church choirs. Leo was raised Catholic and maintained a very strong faith his whole life. He never missed mass unless it was absolutely necessary. He always wore a suit, shirt, and tie to church with polished dress shoes. Leo was not a particularly social person. He didn't need a lot of friends. He loved to read and because of it became a learned man. He also loved the sun. He would lay out in a pair of trunks, one hour a day, the hotter the better! He was very fussy about his appearance. The part in his hair had to be perfect and his clothing had to be perfectly pressed. He spent time polishing his shoes each week until they shone. Leo’s storytelling and sense of humour was evident after a few spiced rum and cokes! Leo suffered the loss of many loved ones. His parents, brother-in-law, Ron, both of his sons-in-law Bruce Melsted and Murray McDermid.
