Funeral Mass will be heldFriday, March 8th 11:00 a.m. St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Wynyard, SK. With heavy hearts, the grandchildren of Nellie Shevella announce her passing on the evening of March 1st in her room at Golden Acres in Wynyard at the age of 97. Nellie Skrypnyk was born Dec. 31, 1915 to Dymetro (Mike) and Anne (Bayda) on the family homestead (Sec.14, TP 30,RGE 16,W2nd) in the Krasne District South of Wynyard. She had three older sisters Mary, Lena and Doris and two brothers John and Harry. Grandma went to Round Hill School attaining a grade 4 education. In her words the teachers were poor and not worth the six mile walk to attend. Her time was more wisely spent helping sustain the family farm. Her chores included gathering pin cherries, saskatoons, wild raspberries and mushrooms. She would help take care of their 4 horses and milk 8 cows daily. She remembers having to care for the pigs, chickens, geese and ducks. Nellie married Mike Shevella on August 12, 1934 in the Greek Catholic Church at Krasne. They lived on section 15 of the Skrypnyk homestead. They had three children, Peter born in 1936, Mary in 1937, and Edward born in 1946. In 1966, Nellie moved to Wynyard at first to live with Stan and Mary; she then rented a house before obtaining the house that she shared with son Peter in 1968. It was at this residence that she became famous for having one of the nicest gardens in town year in and year out. She enjoyed playing Bingo three to four times a week with her friends and daughter. She very much enjoyed and appreciated the help given to her by her neighbors Blair and Judy Langley. In 2009 Nellie moved over to Golden Acres where she received excellent care. She absolutely was tickled pink to be teased by Kim and staff during activity hours. Nellie was predeceased by her father Mike in 1947, her infant son Edward in 1947, her mother Anne in 1965, her husband Mike in 1982, her sister Mary and brother Harry both in 1984, her brother John in 1988, her son Peter in 1994, her sister Doris in 2003, her son in law Stanley in 2008 and her daughter Mary in 2012. Gramma was definitely one tough gal outliving her entire immediate family. She endured many hardships but was also able to enjoy numerous blessings during her life. After 97 years it was her time to seek eternal rest. Nellie will be lovingly remembered by her 6 grandchildren and (10 great grandchildren): Walter Sokul (Saskatoon);Michael and Marny (Brianne and Taylor) Sokul (Saskatoon); Audrey (friend Rick) (Travis, Jayden, and Taysha) Tymryk (Brooks Alberta); Morris and Stephanie (Cuddington) (Rylan and Jaslyn) Sokul (Wynyard); Patricia and Kevin (Brendon, Shane, and Kristen) Sherban (Lanigan); and Marlene Sokul (Wynyard). She will be missed by Barry (nephew) and his mother Clara Nichol, nephew Dave Nichol and the many people who knew Nellies charm. Nellies family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Litwin, Dr. Salter and all of the Wynyard nurses who professionally provided care for grandma. A thousand thank yous are also extended to the wonderful staff at Golden Acres. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wynyard Golden Acres Box 190 Wynyard, Sk.
