Obituary
Laura was born on September 6, 1925 to Harry and Jenny Feniuck. She and two siblings, Kathleen and Metro, were raised on the family farm in the Horse Lake area near West Bend, SK. Laura married the love of her life, Peter Dribnenky, in 1947. They lived briefly in Saskatoon with their children, Harry and Elaine, until they purchased Laura's family farm near West Bend. Laura loved the farm and kept her family well fed by growing a huge garden and keeping chickens, geese, pigeons, pigs and cattle. She always had fresh eggs, cream and home churned butter on hand. It was all organic of course. Laura was a fabulous cook and made all the traditional Ukrainian foods. She was especially fond of squab (young pigeon). At the age of 60 Laura suffered a severe stroke. She determinedly worked at physio and occupational therapy relearning how to walk and use her left hand but remained permanently handicapped. Her husband Peter lovingly supported and cared for her until he died in 1992. Laura was determined to remain in her own home and did so with the assistance of the best neighbours in the world and wonderful Home Care staff. The Reynolds and Hunchak families adopted Laura into their families and looked out for her. She especially loved watching Kyndall, Crystal and Jessica and their friends grow up. She loved them as her grandchildren. She got a real kick out of baking cookies and leaving them mysteriously in the yard ornaments for the kids to find. Laura loved her Adelaide Hoodless rose and growing and sharing a huge garden. She would concoct manure or compost tea or get a load of fresh sheep manure that added to the aroma in the neighbourhood. She really enjoyed saving seeds, experimenting with cures for various plant ailments and trying new things. Every day she patrolled her garden with her hoe and whacked any weeds. Laura waged war on Robins, Waxwings, Sparrows and other birds that raided her berries and vegetables. She enjoyed watching the dragonflies and little birds picking bugs in the yard. Laura held a wealth of gardening knowledge not available in any book or magazine and loved to share it with her daughter Elaine and anyone wanting to listen. In the winter Laura could be seen in her bright orange parka pushing snow from the driveway to the road. It was important to get it done early so the Highways snow plow would take it away. She always liked to get outside for fresh air and exercise. Laura was curious and interested in learning. Her favourite TV shows were Question Period, Farmgate, Jeopardy and Figure Skating. On the radio she enjoyed the Rib Tickler and old time music on Saturday night. While Laura was able she looked forward to a yearly trip to visit her sister Kathleen in Edmonton and daughter Elaine in Red Deer, AB. On Sundays Laura and her sister called each other to talk. As her health and ability failed, Laura went to reside in Long Term Care at the Canora Hospital but just until she was strong enough to return home. She always kept that hope. Laura made many good friends in Canora, especially her roommate Elaine Stallard and her husband Ted. The staff became family to her and cared for her through much pain and suffering (broken hip, breast cancer, nerve pain, dementia). Laura's long time desire was to join her beloved husband Peter in death and did so peacefully on June 21, 2014.
