Obituary
Dr. Hussain Bia passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at his home in Saskatoon, SK at the age of 79. Hussain was born on February 1, 1939 in Riviére du Rempart on the tropical island of Mauritius, the eldest of five boys. He was brought up as a Muslim and was fluent in English, French and Creole. Due to the early death of his father, he stayed and worked for three years in the Civil Service before leaving to compete for early admission to study at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland placing in the top 10 out of 500 applicants. He qualified as a doctor in June 1969. In the same month, he married the love of his life Maud Whitcroft. He worked in Kilkenny and then they moved to Coleraine and Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Their first two daughters, Sheila and Yasmine were born in Northern Ireland. On March 16, 1973, because of the “Troubles” they immigrated to Ituna, Saskatchewan and a year later they moved to Foam Lake where he continued working as a family physician until his retirement 42 years later. One of his highlights included delivering his third daughter, Salima. As a small town doctor, he did many things including maternity, emergency, minor surgery, house calls and, for a number of years, had a clinic in Sheho. He was awarded the Senior Life Membership for 40 years of medical service in Saskatchewan and he served on many medical committees in the region. He also enjoyed and valued his 28 year partnership with Dr. Raj Beeharry. He loved medicine and was dedicated to his patients, some of whom became his good friends. Among his medical colleague friends, several of them became a second family in Canada. He retired in 2016 and moved with Maud to Saskatoon. Over the years he enjoyed many holidays with his family going back home to Mauritius and Northern Ireland along with trips around Canada, the US, England, the Caribbean, Alaska and Paris. His favourite pastimes were cooking, fishing, singing loudly, telling a good story, teasing his grandchildren and spending time with his family and friends. There was never a dull moment when Hussain was around. He is survived by: his wife, Maud, of almost 49 years; daughter Sheila (John) Wilson, their children Melissa, Robert, and Maya of Saskatoon; Yasmine Bia of North Vancouver; daughter Salima Bia (Grant McDougall), their children Kearon, Declan, and Fiona of Calgary; brothers Hassen Bia of England and Ally (Aklima) Bia of Mauritius; sisters-in-law, Hafrose Bia of Mauritius, and Geraldine (Mike) Bigger of England and numerous nieces and nephews; He was predeceased by his parents Fakee Ahmed Bia (1959) and Beebee Batool Jeetoo (1999); brothers Dawood (2010) and Abdulla (2013) Bia.
