Memorial donations in memory of Helgi Helgason can be made to the Foam Lake United Church Helgi Gudbrandur Helgasonpassed away at St. Paul’s Hospital on January 23, 2018 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at the age of 80 after a battle with pneumonia. Helgiis survived by his wife Myrna; children Lyle Helgason of Saskatoon; Dean Helgason of Martensville; and Candace and Mark Caswell of White City; siblings Joan Haskey of Wadena; Marilyn and Keith Barber of Leslie; and Karen and Dale Smith of Orillia, ON; grandchildren Robin and Simon Stoner; Jeremy and Heather Helgason; Megan and Jordan Santoro; Hali Helgason; Lisa Helgason; Alexa Jantzen; Rhiannon Caswell; Anika Caswell; Kaden Phelps; Danai Caswell and Carter Phelps; and great grandchildren Dominick, Lucas, Abel, Mac and Levi. He is preceded in death by his parents Gudi and Gudrun; sister Marcella Lamb; son Mitchell and granddaughter Tara. Helgi was born on January 7, 1939 in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan to Gudi and Gudrun Helgason. He graduated from Foam Lake Composite High School in 1957. After a semester at the University of Saskatchewan, Helgi returned to Foam Lake to farm with his dad. He married Myrna Carroll Josephson, his high school sweetheart in 1958. Helgi and Myrna eventually settled on their home quarter six miles south of Foam Lake where they raised their three sons Lyle, Mitchell and Dean and their daughter Candace. His children remember him as a loving father who worked hard for his family, encouraging them to pursue their goals and live happy lives, no matter what. In his younger years Helgi and his father raced pony chariot and chuck wagons across Saskatchewan. He loved the farm and working the land. He kept active in the community with Air Cadets and 4-H and loved to curl, golf, and play Bridge. The Roughriders were one of his favourite teams and he was a vocal arm-chair quarterback. Helgi worked hard for his community, supporting local businesses and even helping to start and support new ones. He was a dedicated member of the United Church of Canada and often filled in with guest sermons when the Minister was away. In 2018, Helgi and Myrna moved from Foam Lake to Warman, Saskatchewan, bringing them closer to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the Foam Lake area Home Care staff and the staff at Diamond House in Warman for their care and support that helped Dad over the years. A celebration of Helgi’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 30that 2 p.m.at the Foam Lake Community Hall, with a lunch to follow. Susan McIlveen will officiate the ceremony and all are welcome to attend. Donations in Helgi’s memory can be made to the Foam Lake United Church at P.O.
