Obituary
Funeral Mass 10:00 am Friday, March 4, 2016 Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church Foam Lake, Saskatchewan On February 28, 2016, Katie Chaykoski began her journey to eternal rest at the Foam Lake Jubilee Home at the age of 93. Katie was born on February 7, 1923, to Metro and Aksana Rokochy of the Edmore District, south of Foam Lake. As a young girl she attended Ashdown School. Katie met and married Nick Chaykoski and they moved a short distance east to the Briarmound District, where they farmed and had their family, which consisted of four boys. Her boys were Katie’s Pride and Joy throughout her life. In 1959 they bought a home in Foam Lake and moved their family to town. Katie was a hard worker and would complete any job in a steady, methodical, efficient manner. She worked outside of the home for many years, at the local creamery and also held various other jobs in and around Foam Lake. Inside her home, she ran and organized a virtual food factory and was well known for making pies, perogies, cabbage rolls, beetniks, beetrolls and more, to not only feed her family, but to supply many families in the community with her delicious, traditional foods. The odds are that any one from, or anyone visiting Foam Lake over the past 60 years, probably ate food prepared by her at some point in time. No-one ever left Mom’s home hungry. Her talent for ‘whipping up’ full course meals on short, or no notice, along with her catering skills are legendary. The Church and her faith were very important to Katie. She served the congregation of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Foam Lake in varied ways, as church treasurer and she was long-time director of the church choir. She was also a faithful member of the Orthodox Ladies Aid, who provided support to their church over the years. Her belief in God, allowed her to look and find the good in everything and everyone. Although Katie worked hard, she made sure to take time to enjoy, and be an active participant in our community. She was an avid hockey fan and for as long as she could, never missed a Foam Lake Flyer home game. She curled, and gardened, (colourful flowers were a favourite). She knitted, crocheted, crafted and spent countless hours piecing together intricate puzzles. Even with her varied interests, she had a burning passion for bingo and loved not only the thrill of trying to win the jackpot, but also enjoyed the social aspects and friendships that she made during those outings. Her bingo friends were a special part of her life. Katie was pre-deceased by her parents, Metro Rokochy, 1947 and mother Aksana Rokochy, in 1994. She was also pre-deceased by brothers Steve Rokochy 2008, John Rokochy 2003, Metro Rokochy, in infancy 1919, and sisters Mary Armstrong, 2004, Lily Wasylovich 1979, Aksana Rokochy in infancy 1918, Katie Rokochy in infancy 1917, Mary Rokochy in infancy 1916 and by grandson Myles Chaykoski in 2003. Katie leaves to celebrate and rejoice in her memory; sons Terry (Delores), Chaykoski of Swan River, Man., Michael Chaykoski of Regina, Sk., Metro (Shelley) Chaykoski of Foam Lake, Sk. and Ronnie Chaykoski of Foam Lake, Sk., sister Lena Babiuk of Summerland B.C., and brother Russel (Audrey) Rokochy of Foam Lake, Sk. Katie also leaves to celebrate, 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and very special niece and nephew Barb and Tyler Curvollo. May she rest in peace, safe in the arms of our Lord.
