I met Wendell on April 7, 1983 at a bus stop outside of Hong Kong’s Kai Tak airport. He glanced at the Canadian flag on my pack. “Hi. I’m Wendell from Foam Lake, Saskatchewan.”
It was my first day in Asia and the YMCA where I planned to stay was fully booked. I must have looked bewildered.
“Follow me,” he said.
We climbed on a double-decker bus to Kowloon and later split the cost of a room at the notorious Chungking Mansion. Over the next day or so, he generously introduced me to Hong Kong while he bought gifts for friends.
Wendell’s advice for a solo, rookie backpacker? When the money runs out, go home. Never be so desperate to stay on the road that you’ll do something stupid like smuggling.
Wendell, rest in peace.

There are few things better than a friend with a lot of stories - and Wendell had a million of them. Some of these have now been passed on to my own kids as they begin to explore the world. Sometimes the tales are cautionary. (Never fight a vampire bat for your breakfast.) Some are inspirational. ("Miles Davis is playing down there somewhere", he said in a Tokyo tower. "We have to find a way in." And we did!) Wendell was afraid of nothing when it came to a sense of adventure and he was good at laughing about all the things I worried about. Thanks, Wendell. It has been a better life to have had you as a neighbour and a friend.

Wendel's Obit should include that he travelled the world as a young man, asia, australia, america, mexico, europe, and more. He was the finest brick paver saskatoon will ever see. A strong man with strong hands, a strong heart, and an unshakeable will. Honest and generous with everyone he met and always ready with a smile and a joke to lighten your mood. He was a joy to be around even when he wasn't being a joy.

We are so sad to hear about Wendell. Clayon and I have been living in the beautiful house he built in Bradwell and had become good friends throughout the years. We would exchange our fruit and veggie pickings on a regular basis and look forward to the visits and the tours of his new additions out at his place just outside of town. He will be missed...our home will always be filled with Wendel memories.

My sincere condolences on the passing of Wendell. Such a great person. I always called him Organic Wendell as he lived off the land. The first time I ever tried fried banana and ice cream was when he made it for a friend and I many years ago. Loved listening to his stories.. He will be missed.
