Click Here For Service Michael S. Medvid was born on July 24, 1941 to Steve and Margaret (Haluke) Medvid in the Sheho District. Michael attended Deer Creek School from Grades 1 to 9, Grade 10 in Sheho and he took Grade 11 in Foam Lake. Michael completed his Grade 11 and 12 by correspondence. At this time, Michael became extremely sick and was hospitalized for a few months. Michael started working for a farmer north east of Winnipeg, but his family roots pulled him back to his home in Sheho. Michael’s travels in the work force took him to various parts of the country's. From Winnipeg to Edmonton, Estevan, and numerous places in between. His jobs included construction labourer, pipeline employee, cat operator, truck driver and a mechanic in Canora. As a mechanic, Michael worked at Wunder’s Esso Service and coinciding with his work, Michael drove the school bus. While driving the school bus, and checking the mirror, one of his passengers caught his eye. On July 6, 1968 Michael married Violet Semchuk at the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church (Insinger). He left his bus driving job to seek other employment but was encouraged by Mr. Alex Kuchervay (Trustee) to resume his bus driving career; since Michael had no love for the city and Violet was a farm girl, he accepted the offer. He was a conscientious and dedicated driver and Michael drove the bus for 44 consecutive years. Then Michael retired, but his love for driving the bus and especially his love for the children inspired him to drive for another 11 years, as a spare bus driver. His dedication left a legacy of driving for a total of 55 years of service. Michael drove three generations of family members safely to school. Michael and Violet bought a small house in Sheho which they lovingly improved. Michael drove to Foam Lake and between his trips he worked on Mr. Craig’s dairy farm for 4 years until the farm was sold. In 1969, Michael and Violet bought their first quarter of bush land from Mr. Tom Boitson. Now any free time was spent developing their yard site (old Deer Creek School yard) and clearing new land. Between bus trips Michael drove for Foam Lake Coop making tri-weekly trips to Yorkton transporting produce and other supplies. In 1972, Michael and Violet rented a house from Morris Nekorak south of Sheho where they resided until 1975. They moved a house on the land they bought, and this became their forever home in which they reside to the present day. Michael and Violet started their farm operation by milking cows, raising pigs and chickens as well as their pet cats and a dog. The work was hard, but they loved the farm life and lovingly worked together doing what needed to be done. In March 1983, Michael and Violet welcomed with loving arms their beautiful baby girl, Colette Dawn to complete their family. She was the twinkle in Michael’s eyes and quickly captured his heart. Michael and Colette shared the love of the land and he affectionately taught her how to care and look after animals. Michael and Violet farmed until 2010 when they decided to rent out the land, but they continued to live on the farm and enjoy the farm life. Life after farming for Michael consisted of him tinkering in the shop, fixing, or remodelingwhatever needed repair. His talents in getting things working was amazing. Michael loved his old Ukrainian music and songs. He played the guitar with Fiddling Walter and the Prairie Pioneers for 13 years. Many fond memories were shared about the dances and weddings for which he played. Michael was an active member of the St Nicholas Catholic Church (Insinger). He took immense pride in cutting the grass and maintaining other surrounding cemeteries. He fondly took pictures of old schools and cemeteries/church sites and recorded the historical information. Michael had a keen sense of humour and a magnetic wit about him. Various clubs and organizations were honoured to have Michael volunteer to work at their functions. He also served on the Recreation Board in Sheho. Michael and Violet enjoyed entertaining family and friends on the family farm. The door was always open, coffee was ready, and the conversations were enlightening. Two special little guests were Lukas and Lea Birkle who brought immense joy to Michael. On May 22, 2021 (coincidentally the same day as his daughter – Collette’s passing) Michael suffered a tragic farm accident and was taken to the Yorkton Hospital and then transferred to the Regina General Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries and passed away on May 31, 2021. Michael is survived by his loving wife Violet of 52 years of marriage, two sisters-in-law, Judy Semchuk (Garry Maksymiak); Sharon (Randy) McMillan; nephews – Trent (Karlene), Todd (Sarah) and Chad (Neelie), as well as numerous cousins, friends and neighbours. Michael is predeceased by his daughter Colette (2015), his parents Margaret (1997) and Steve (1998), brother Nicholas (1940), sister Effie (1944) and in-laws Mike (1997) and Ann (2007) Semchuk.
