Mary Alice Gessner was born May 29, 1914. She was the daughter of William and Beatrice Casement of the Leslie District. Mary was Stefan "Steve" Olafson. Steve and Maizie married on August 1, 1939 in Toronto, Ontario. They spent a few years in Ontario but returned to farm north of Leslie, Saskatchewan. They were blessed with two sons, Lloyd and Edwin. Unfortunately Edwin passed away from Leukemia at the age of five. Steve and Maizie made the farm their home until 1968 when they moved to Foam Lake, SK. Steve passed away in 1969. Maizie met her second husband Aloys "Al" Gessner while they were both patients at the Foam Lake Hospital. Al and Maizie were married April 8, 1974. They resided in Foam Lake until the late 1970's when they moved to McKague, SK where they made their home for over 30 years. Al and Maizie then moved back to Foam Lake where they lived until their deaths. Maizie will always be remembered for her love of family, gardening and farm life. Maizie lived a full life farming and gardening until well into her 90's. You could often find Maizie tending to her garden, gathering eggs or milking cows. There was always fresh milk and cream and homemade butter with freshly baked bread on Maizie's table. Her grandchildren loved her chocolate cake and unbaked slice with her famous caramel icing which were always staples at Gran's house. Maizie enjoyed crocheting and sewing and many benefitted over the years with gifts from her talents. She volunteered her time with the United Church Women, Icelandic Solskin Ladies Aid and Farmers Union to name a few. Maizie spent her final years at the Foam Lake Jubilee Home where she passed away May 31, 2015 just a few days after her 101st birthday. In appreciation for the care and compassion Gran was given the family asks that donations be made to the Foam Lake Jubilee Home in Maizie's memory.
