He grew up on the Skjerven homestead south of Kandahar and spent his entire life there. Derrell loved farming right from the start. His mother said he always wanted to be a farmer. Derrell and his wife Judy, and son Darren raised Charolais cattle and later adding Texas Longhorns to the herd. Summers were spent haying in between seeding and harvesting. Derrell loved listening to the old-time dance party on the radio on Saturday nights while combining. The farm was filled with many vintage tractors and vehicles which he loved to fix and drive. He was so glad to have the opportunity to work up north doing seismograph during the winters, returning home in the spring to farm. At 61 Derrell decided to go back to work in the oilpatch starting in Lashburn SK and ending up in Wabasca AB. He treasured the friendships he made during the 8 years he was there. Derrell was especially excited and proud when Darren married Liz and the grandchildren started arriving. They were the joy of his life. He loved to tease Danika, Jaxen, and Henrik and they called him the “funny Grandpa”. He was very involved with Alcoholics Anonymous, attending many round ups, as well as attending weekly meetings when he was home. He treasured his 45-year medallion which was lost but was found very recently. This made him extremely happy and thankful. He enjoyed fishing trips in Northern Sask with family and friends, camping trips to the states and the mountains, and trips to Hostfest in Minot with his sisters and his niece who he called Punkin. Derrell was an expert on family and community history even having requests to write a book or two about this. He loved family reunions and attended as many as he could. The front door on the farm was always open to friends, neighbors, and family for coffee and a visit. Derrell had the amazing ability to make friends at any point in his life with ages ranging from young to old. These friendships were very near to his heart. He was a voice of reason and touched a lot of people’s lives. Known for his positivity and his great laugh, always bringing a smile to people’s faces. So many things brought him so much joy and happiness there was little room for negativity. He was the first to leave his own work to help a neighbor with whatever they needed. Derrell passed away March 28 2021 at the Wynyard Hospital. He will be missed dearly by many that met him during his life.
