Obituary
Joe was born on March 9, 1922, in southern Poland, to Antoni and Karoline Oleyarz. When Joe was about 4 years old his father left Poland to make a new life for his family in Canada. Joe stayed behind with his mom, his younger sister, Jennie, and their relatives. In 1933 Joe, his mom and Jennie traveled to Canada by freight ship to finally join Joe’s dad. By then Joe’s dad was farming near Fosston after a failed attempt to farm near Cedoux in the early years of the depression. At Fosston, in 1935, Joe’s family welcomed another sister for Joe, Stella. The family suffered the death of Joe’s mom a couple years later, in 1937. The family moved from Fosston to a farm northeast of Paswegin, it was there that Joe met his future wife and love of his life, Joan Eyre. The couple were married on October 4th, 1947 at St Mary’s Church in Fosston. Joe and Joan spent over 67 happy years together until Joan died in 2015. Most of their married life was spent on their farm near Paswegin, but in the 1980’s they bought a house in Wadena. After that, for a number of years, they spent summers at the farm and winters in town. Eventually, they moved to Wadena summer and winter. Joe and Joan were usually together in their activities, farming, dancing, attending fiddling contests. They liked going for drives on Saturday afternoons and having a glass of wine after Mass on Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings. Faith and God were important to both of them, they volunteered in many church activities including delivering ‘meals on wheels’ and the building of the new church in 1971. Joe’s church community looked out for him when his health was failing. Joe was close to both of his sisters, he and Jennie had been through many trials and joys together, Stella was much younger and Joe liked to call her “jefchina”,(little girl in Polish), even in their adult years. In 1986 Joe and Jennie were able to return to Poland and reacquaint with some of their relatives. Joe lived in his home in Wadena until 2018, his last 2 ½ years were spent at Pleasantview Care Home. Joe was predeceased by his two sisters and his brother in law, Joe Hudy. He leaves behind his brother in law Al Reed of Edmonton, his sister in law Kathy Eyre of California, two nephews and six nieces. Prayers 7:00 P.M.
