Olga Kulyk was born on May 13, 1924 in Kolynci, Poland to her parents George and Maria. Olga was always a very active little girl. Her family lived together in a two room house with a dirt floor. Olga never had the opportunity to go to school beyond grade four, so at a very young age, she began to work for other families in the village cleaning their homes and doing chores. When she was 13, Olga and her family had the opportunity to immigrate to Canada and began their long and difficult trek in May of 1938. Olga, her parents, her brother Bill and his wife Minnie and their daughter Mary, as well as her sister Mary and youngest brother Mike all made the journey. Her sister Malenka, who was married, remained behind. Upon their arrival, Olga and her family settled on a farm five miles NE of Kylemore. At the age of 14, Olga moved in with the Pluhator family where she helped raise their three sons. As a young girl, Olga, her sister Mary and their neighbour friends the Sawchuk girls, would walk many miles to attend country dances. It was at a dance at Bear Lake, where the Daviduk Brother's Band was playing, that she first met the handsome banjo player, Matt. They fell in love and were married on March 10, 1945. They made their home in Kuroki, where their first child Dianne was born. In 1951, Matt and Olga moved to Margo, and purchased the lumber yard; here they were blessed with two more children, son, Donald and daughter, Barbara. Olga and Matt operated Margo lumber for many years, serving the community and surrounding areas. In 1962, Matt and Olga cleared a lot at Fishing Lake and built a small cabin. The cabin was the beginning of many gatherings and good times. As the family grew, so did the cabin. Many memories with family and friends were made at this special place and still are to this day. Olga loved the lake and made many miles walking up and down the lake road to visit other family and friends. Olga was always very active in her church and community. She was especially known for her fantastic soups, tasty pies and unforgettable perogies, which she often supplied or helped make for the curling rink, or any other of the numerous events in the community. She was always willing to volunteer on any committee and enjoyed "pitching in" wherever needed. Olga was happiest when she was feeding someone. Whether it was family, friends, a passing salesman, visiting curlers or her neighbours, Olga insisted that you eat.Her garden was the talk of the town, and was always large enough to supply fresh produce to many others. She took pride in her garden, and she was an active gardener up to the age of 90. Olga was always a country girl at heart. She loved to go for drives in the country, pick Saskatoon berries, or mushrooms, and checking the progress of the crops. She always had a keen eye and could spot a bald eagle or wildlife from miles away. After 63 years of marriage, Matt passed away in December of 2008. Olga remained in their home in Margo until this past May, when she moved to Weneeda Park Lodge in Wadena. Olga enjoyed her new home very much and loved being with her many friends there. To Olga, family was always the most important and she loved them all dearly. Her grandchildren were the loves of her life. She was fortunate to be able to watch all eight of them grow up and was proud of the adults they had become.Olga was also blessed to be baba' to nine great-grandchildren, each of which held a special place in her heart and created an unforgettable twinkle in her eye. Her life is a legacy to her entire family and the values, morals and love of God she has passed on will be cherished forever.
