Prayer Service 7:00p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2016 Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church Wynyard, Saskatchewan Funeral Service 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2016 Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church Wynyard, Saskatchewan Joe Bashutsky was born February 26, 1934 on a farm in the Round Hills district. He was the eleventh child in their family of twelve children born to Michael and Mary (nee Popadynetz). He attended Round Hills School. In 1952 his mom and dad moved to town; Joe and brother Harry farmed together for three years. Joe was an athlete and loved to play ball. He was the Round Hills third baseman and often told the story of the spectacular play where he himself made three outs. This excited teammate, Nick Shular, who attempted to make the fourth out. Joe met Olga Bachynski and they were married on October 16, 1955. They continued to farm on the family homestead. He went to the bush camp in Northern Alberta during the winter of 1956/57. Joe and Olga had two children, Valerie and Jody. Joe raised cattle until about 8 years ago. The farm was his greatest pride and his dreams came true when his son and grandsons joined him in building the family farm. He achieved the 100 year Heritage Farm Award in July 2014. Joe enjoyed going to auction sales and picking up lunch on the way which consisted of kobassa, a loaf of bread and a Fanta orange pop-The Ukrainian lunch. He travelled all three prairie provinces for auction sales. One purchase was a granary in northern Saskatchewan which he had bought for the contents- cultivator shovels. He was a hard working farmer who was known to pull “all nighters” - combining when there was word of a rain cloud on the way. He combined his last harvest in 2015 at the age of 81. Joe loved to play pool, go for coffee at the A & W, play three-spot and any card game anyone would play. In recent years he turned to gardening as his hobby and enjoyed taking the shuttle bus to Yorkton to spend the day at the casino. Joe was predeceased by his parents Mike and Mary; brothers Steve, John and Harry; sisters Rosie Shular, Jennie Nolan, Caroline Woynarski, and Mary Popadynetz. Left to cherish Joe’s memory and celebrate his life are his wife of 60 years, Olga, his daughter, Valerie (Les) Laing, children Glenys (Corey) Kyle, Janyne, Kendra; son, Jody (Janice), children J.C., Jake, Jessy (Kevin) Roszell children Brikley, Kanon; sisters Anne, Sophie, Kay and Irene; brother-in-law Leo Bachynski (Shirley); and sister-in-law Sandra Bachynski; and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all of us.
