Obituary
Theresa Franko passed away on January 27th, 2015, at her home in Watson, Saskatchewan. She was born in Nova Tapola in Yugoslavia to Anton and Maria Theresia Mahlberg. She was the second child of a family of seven children. The family prospered in that area as Grandpa ran a brick factory owned by his Uncle and Grandma along with raising seven children also worked hard at the family owned hotel. The family had just completed building a new house when circumstances of WWII forced them to flee to central Europe and leave all their possessions behind. The family then made plans to immigrate to Canada. Mom, along with her brother Peter, came to Canada first to begin work to save money and bring along the rest of the family. Mom did mostly domestic house work for local families but ended up working in the Dress Shop in Watson. She loved this work and often talked about her times working with people she met. The rest of the family arrived in Canada in 1951. In 1952, she married our father Bill Franko, and then moved to the family farm near Wimmer. Mom and Dad also gave a loving home to Mom's sister Bergie as our Grandmother passed away at an early age and our Mother promised her that Bergie would be part of our family. The years on the farm were filled with hard work but there were wonderful times with family and friends. The outings, picnics and great family celebrations on birthdays and Christmas was particularly memorable. In 1961, Mom and Dad left the farm and moved to Wadena with their five boys. Wadena proved to be a wonderful place for the whole family. Mom became very active in the community. The Kinsmen ladies group, golf club and the curling club occupied her time as she raised her family. Mom also served on the School Board for several years. The cabin at Fishing Lake was one of her favorite places and we had some wonderful times there. During the summer our Mother would gather together a large group of cousins for swimming lessons. We all still talk about the happy times together at the old Fishing Lake cabin. We all made life long friends in Wadena and Mom often talked about the warmth she felt for her Wadena friends. Employment moved the family to Regina in 1971. She enjoyed her time in Regina but looked forward to the weekends and vacations at the cabin. Mom enjoyed golf and was particularly proud of her performance in a Provincial amateur golf tournament. Her knitting skills were remarkable and family, friends and customers lined up to own anything she would knit for them. When retirement came the couple built a new house at Fishing Lake. It was a wonderful place for all of us to visit. Our parents spent time traveling and most winters in their vacation home in Mesa, Arizona. Mom often talked about the river cruise in Europe that her and Dad enjoyed so much, especially after meeting some wonderful people who became friends. Visiting friends and relatives in Central Europe became such a joy for our mother, she was so loved and will be sadly missed overseas. White Rock B.C. was their next move as they wanted to be closer to services and a warmer climate. In 2002 Dad passed away. Mom missed her family and friends in Saskatchewan so much that she moved back to Watson in 2007. Mom was happy in her years in Watson and she had many visitors. She was so wonderful to be around no matter what your age. We all looked up to her so much as she talked about her life on this earth. She loved to play bridge and bingo and spend a lot of time with her sister-in-laws Ann Chyz and Lil Franko. Lunch, dinner or just coffee with friends and family at the Quick Stop were also a joy to her, Ron and Sharon treated her like royalty. Mom was predeceased by her husband William Franko, parents Anton and Maria Theresia Mahlberg. Brothers Henry, Peter, Alphonse and her sisters Rosina Kientz and Bergie Wilson. Theresa is survived by her five sons. Richard (Karen), Wayne, Lyle (Lynn), Doug (Joanne), Kelly (Akiko), eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Herman Mahlberg and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gene and Shirley Franko, sister-in-laws, Ann Chyz, Lil Franko, Peggy Franko and Sally Mahlberg. We would like to thank all the people and organizations that helped our Mother and made her welcome in Watson. She often talked about how well she was treated at the Watson Library, Credit Union, Watson Pharmacy and indeed all the people she came in contact with in the Community. We would also like to thank Donna Wysoskey who helped our Mom so much and always made her day brighter.
