Obituary
In Loving Memory of Harvey Buhr Harvey was born in Moose Jaw and was raised in the Lucky Lake area of Saskatchewan. As a young boy dad said he would go out into the country and shoot rabbits and other small animals and sell the pelts. He did actually take a carriage and horses to school in the morning and he was educated in a small school house in the area. Dad enjoyed learning and he did well in his studies, enjoying math and reading. The family was raised during the depths of the depression and food and supplies were scarce, dad said that although times were hard he never remembered going hungry. Dad remembered trips into town for basics such as flour and sugar but the family grew or made everything that they ate, he remembers his mother and sisters baking and cooking all day and canning meat and other foods to prepare for the cold winters. Dad left home and first worked in a dairy plant in Alberta, he would always tell the story of when he started he was thin and after a while working moving the milk crates around and drinking chocolate milk haha he gained weight and muscle and was a pretty big guy. Dad was thinking to head to Regina when he came across an abandoned vehicle which he got going and took off to Regina. Harvey met Marie at the Wascana Pool in Regina, mom said she saw this tall dark handsome man and she went right over to talk to him. Mom said he was rolling his own cigarettes and he had a tattoo and she thought he was just the coolest, apparently dad wasn't all that interested at first in mom and was trying to brush her off. But the next day he saw her again and quickly changed his mind and so began their life together. Dad started working with Canadian Pacific Railway and the job involved a lot of travel. Our parents lived as far north as Churchill, Manitoba and mom remembered once she baked a pie and set it outside to cool when a polar bear wondered along and ate the pie! Dad always wanted to farm and our parents bought a small farm in the Craven Valley area. Dad would work all day with CPR and get home to do his farm work. Our parents began selling their local, graded eggs - mom would market them out of the station wagon to bakers and restaurants in Regina. When they landed the co-op grocery stores in Regina and their business was growing, my parents were able to buy a larger farm in the Raymore area and dad made farming his full time work. At the time CPR was relocating to Saskatoon and dads colleagues were all disappointed that dad was not going to go with them, they told dad he could bring the chickens to Saskatoon just not to the office. Dad experienced a lot of loss but worst was losing the love of his life Marie in 1998, he was a strong example to us that despite what life gives us we must keep going. Losing two of his sons was very difficult for dad but he remained strong keeping the family going. Harvey loved the land and farming was his passion and joy, to plant his crop and watch it grow to harvest was most satisfying. Dad worked with different methods of farming through out the years but organic farming was his love. Dad loved nature and took great joy in the wild life that would live or pass through his farm, he would talk about the owl that was hanging around or the fox with a litter hiding under the shed, all welcome to him. Despite years catching up to him, our dad remained living independently. He would of been so sad to have lost his ability to go out and work on a piece of machinery or spend time fixing in his shop, or cooking and driving into town for his groceries. These things he was able to do right up until his last day, leaving this world wearing his work boots.
