My husband Brian Walter and I were very sad to hear that Jack had died. His presence in Wynyard was one of those reliable things - those "constants" - that a person feels, unrealistically of course, will always be there. Back in 1973 I had a date with Jack, just before I went off to pursue my own dream of becoming a reporter - just as he had done. Our conversations were wide-ranging: politics, the environment (he was a very early adopter of understanding the need to take care of this planet), writing, and more. Any time I'd come back to Wynyard, if I had a dog and was out walking her, it seemed I'd always run into him and he was at least as happy to see the dog as to see me. As it should be. Brian and I will always remember Jack, and we'll be donating to one of his preferred charities in his name. Leatha (Johnston) Carter & Brian Walter
