I was so shocked and so sad to hear of Jack's sudden passing. I just talked to him about a month ago on the phone about the work he was doing to support Ukraine and its people and I was so inspired by his efforts to bring people together to help one another. And that is just how I remember Jack; he was always there, always ready to offer a helping hand and always supporting those who were in need. He had such a big heart and I learned a lot from Jack about living well and generously in the world. I also remember with gratitude how much he helped me when I was living and working at the United Church in Wynyard (2002-2004). He would rototill the garden, do odd jobs around the manse that needed done, and often when I was working I would come home and the grass was cut and the yard looking beautiful or the snow was shoveled and the sidewalks cleared...and I knew Jack had been there. Since I moved back to Humboldt we have stayed in touch; and a few times a year, when he was planning to be in Humboldt or needing to pick something up from the Vet for one of his beloved 4 legged companions, he would call ahead and we would arrange to have coffee and a visit. When I talked to him recently we planned to do that again this summer now that pandemic restrictions have been lifted. I was so looking forward to reconnecting with Jack and catching up on our missed visits over the past 2 years. Sadly however, that is not going to happen now. Jack was a dear friend and I will miss him. His kind and caring ways will live on...

Sorry about your loss. I spent one overnight “sleep over “at your house and thought it was special to stay at another house. I need to hear more stories. See you later

I am so very sorry to hear that Jack has left us. He was one year ahead of me in high school in the 60's . I played hockey with him and remember him as a really great guy. In the 1990's after my Dad passed my Mom had Jack over to trim bushes and paint fences. Jack introduced me to (too much information) the Thai deordorant rock that I use to this day. In the 60's before I left Wynyard he was "one of the good guys"; when I reconnected with him in the 90's he seemed to me to be very much his own man, comfortable in his own skin, and and an admirable man. Very sad that he is gone - but not forgotten.

I will certainly miss Jack the next time I visit Wynyard. Almost every time we made a trip "back home" I was sure to have a warm and friendly reunion with Jack. He would bring me up to date on the Wynyard news and often answer my queries about old friends or school mates. For me, he was always the embodiment of Wynyard and home. Rest easy, old friend.

My sympathies to all of Jacks family and friends. Jacks love for dogs was how I met him at the Humboldt SPCA. If we had room I would take in the animals he had saved. His heart was big we had many long visits at spca mostly about animals or his bus driving experiences. As his dogs got older he’d stop in on his many trips to the vets. I loved how he cared so much for them. I will miss Jack very much and hope he is surrounded by furry friends in heaven.

My husband Brian Walter and I were very sad to hear that Jack had died. His presence in Wynyard was one of those reliable things - those "constants" - that a person feels, unrealistically of course, will always be there. Back in 1973 I had a date with Jack, just before I went off to pursue my own dream of becoming a reporter - just as he had done. Our conversations were wide-ranging: politics, the environment (he was a very early adopter of understanding the need to take care of this planet), writing, and more. Any time I'd come back to Wynyard, if I had a dog and was out walking her, it seemed I'd always run into him and he was at least as happy to see the dog as to see me. As it should be. Brian and I will always remember Jack, and we'll be donating to one of his preferred charities in his name. Leatha (Johnston) Carter & Brian Walter

You just had to love Jack's perspective on so many topics. A wonderful guy with a strong sense of humour and community as well as a love for animals. A conversation with Jack could wind around many topics and then come to rest in Wynyard ... his town! Rest easy now. Norm & Jan Park

Jack you were the best friend anyone could have had. When I was in the hospital recently I knew you were there to care for my cats. You were always looking after the strays in town and usually knew who they belonged to. The picture of you and Dakota together makes me feel that you two are finally together. I’m going to miss you very much and already do.

I always enjoyed visiting with Jack when he and his companions were out on their daily routine. There's a lot of people in town that came to depend on Jack for small things that made their lives a little easier. He certainly will be missed.

I am saddened to hear of Jack’s passing. I worked with him in Wynyard over a few summers at the Recycling Center and he was kind, funny and such a genuine person who saw something in people and cared greatly about the community. Rest In Peace Jack.

Jack had a kind and caring nature. Always ready to help and ready with good conversation. He loved animals and especially dogs. He is probably still busy on the Rainbow Bridge being greeted by the canines that went before him. RIP my friend.
