Obituary
Kathryn Mary Francis Syrota passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, May 23rd, 2016, at the Wadena Union Hospital. Kathy was born in Wadena on January 18th, 1959, and was the 5th child born to Steve and Bernadine Nakrayko. Kathy grew up on their family farm outside of Kelvington, and attended Robert Melrose Elementary and Kelvington High School. It was there she made many lasting memories, life-long friendships, and participated in various activities including Track and Field, Basketball, and of course, Glee Club. Following in her parents footsteps, Kathy discovered her love for music at a very early age. By Grade 6 Kathy had acquired her role as drummer and vocalist in The Garnets, her father’s band. Kathy’s harmony was unique and unparalleled. Her commitment to the band continued into adult life. Music brought Kathy joy in more ways than one. It was through music that she met the absolute love of her life, Neil Syrota. It was love at first sight and both knew, beyond a doubt, that they were destined to spend their lifetime together. They were married in Kelvington on August 25th, 1979, and eagerly began to build their life together on a farm near Elfros. Marriage for Kathy and Neil was sacred, and something they never had to ‘work’ at, it was just natural with mutual love and respect. Into this union, they were blessed with two children, Nicole Kathryn and Mallory Dawn. Kathy’s love extended to include Mallory’s husband Greg Lawrence, and their two children Zane and Jacob. As a wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandma she was absolutely perfect and tended to her family’s needs with the utmost care and attention. Balancing family and career came with ease to Kathy as she thrived in various occupations including Neill’s Jewelry, 5 - Dollar Store, babysitting, and, until her illness, was employed at the Wadena Drug Store. Aside from family, Kathy’s joys in life included walking, cooking, and gardening. She was strong in her faith, was an active parishioner, and choir member. Kathy was a kind, gentle, and caring person. Always a model of unselfishness, never too tired or too busy to lend a helping hand. She expected the best of herself and always found the good in others. Ever the optimist, Kathy’s positive outlook, sheer determination, love of family, and faith continued to her very last breath. Although saddened by her diagnosis of cancer, Kathy’s strength and bravery carried her and everyone who loved her through her 3½ year battle with the disease. Kathy was predeceased by her Father Steve Nakrayko; Sister Cheri Chorney; Nephew Joey Nakrayko; Father-in-law Nestor Syrota; Mother-in-law Anne Syrota; and Niece Mary Syrota.
