Obituary
Irene Yaskowich was born the youngest of 14 children to Theodore (Fred) and Eudokia (Dora) Bzdel. She was born in the RM of Emerald in the Honeybank district on August 6th, 1939. Irene celebrated her birthday on Sept 8th for years until one day her oldest sister, Annie, said that she was born in August during harvest and was not registered till September. She often celebrated two birthdays as a result. Irene went to school in Honeybank for grades 1 & 2. The family then moved to Wynyard where she attended WES and WCHS. She married Lawrence Yaskowich ( a local boy) on October 13, 1958. They settled in the town of Wynyard and had three children in three years-Gary, Michael and Elaine. They were overflowing in their little house and built a new house across the lane, this was where the last child, Susan, came along. In 1966 they built east of Wynyard on the farm and lived there for 29 years. After Lawrence’s stroke in 1995, they moved to a condo in town where Irene lived until she entered Golden Acres on October 31, 2019. Irene was active through the years in the church and especially the CWL. She was active on the Provincial CWL in several capacities including Spiritual Convenor and President and attended many conventions. She was on numerous committees in town, including Home Care and Wynyard Housing Authority, as well as a charter member of St Mary's Catholic Women's League (CWL). She was an avid curler, gardener, reader, quilter and was an accomplished seamstress. She had a passion for knitting, we all have a lovely siwash tucked away somewhere. She loved cooking, baking and keeping a well stocked freezer. She was well travelled and would joke that her grandchildren called her “ Have bag, will travel, Baba”. Irene was generous with her hospitality and love. She would happily feed anyone who arrived at the house. Many a hungry teenager followed one of her grandchildren to her condo and was always warmly welcomed. She loved good conversation, laughter, cards and games. She was happiest when she had her family and friends around her. She has been predeceased by the love of her life, her husband Lawrence in 2007 and her great grandson Jonathan in 2020.
