Obituary
Yolanda Estelle (Eirickson) Gislason, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the Foam Lake Jubilee Nursing Home in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan with family by her side. She was a wonderful woman, loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Yolanda was born to Anna & Ernest Eirickson on July 25, 1925 in Elfros, SK as the second oldest of four children. She attended school in Elfros where her father was a barber until 1934 when the family moved just a short distance out of Elfros to start farming. Yolanda attended Normal School in Saskatoon to become a teacher and taught at Caledon and Wallhalla Schools until 1945 when she developed heart problems. She then clerked at the hardware store in Elfros for a brief time until her marriage. On June 30, 1946 Yolanda married Larry Gislason of Leslie, SK at her parents’ home just west of Elfros. It was a beautiful lawn wedding with their honeymoon spent at Clear Lake, MB. The newlyweds made their home on a farm 3 1/2 miles north of Leslie next to the farm where Larry was born and grew up. There they farmed with Larry’s father and brothers until 1960 when they moved 3 miles west of Foam Lake upon purchasing Norman and Runa Helgason’s farm. Will-O-Hi became their home where they continued their life together and raised their 4 children. Along with busy life on the farm and looking after her children, Yolanda was active in the community helping to start and belonging to many clubs and organizations including: Vatnabyggd Icelandic Club, Leslie Church Ladies Aide, Icelandic Solskin Ladies Aide Club, Rebekah Lodge, Foam Lake School of Dance, Foam Lake United Church Sunday School teacher. She was supportive in all of the activities her children and grandchildren participated in by attending sports and school events, sewing countless numbers of dance costumes for her daughter and granddaughters. Yolanda worked hard to make sure everything she was involved in was done properly to the last detail. Yolanda was a very talented women when it came to baking, cooking and anything to do with sewing, knitting and crafting. Her traditional Icelandic dishes along with holiday meals and basically everything that came out of her kitchen was always the best meal you ever ate - until you ate her next one! But the kitchen was not her favourite place to be. It was her sewing machine or holding a set of knitting needles or laying out a pattern for a new outfit. Yolanda was a master at sewing and knitting and was was not afraid to attempt anything new in the world of crafting. She enjoyed watching sewing channels on TV and attended numerous classes that were offered around the province. No pattern or project was too difficult for her and she welcomed the challenge of figuring things out to perfection. Her handiwork, be it clothing, quilts, or needlework pictures were as perfect on the back or inside as the front or outside. She sewed most of her own clothes as well as for her family, and knitted over a hundred Icelandic sweaters, mittens, and Icelandic dresses - one of which is displayed on a doll in the Foam Lake museum. She loved knitting sweaters and sewing outfits for her grandchildren which were one of-a-kind fashions. Yolanda’s quilting allowed her to shop for varieties of material to use in her beautiful quilts which, as well, were done with exact accuracy and precision. Being a teacher, she was always willing to share her creative talents with others by teaching adult classes and helping fellow sewers and knitters with problems or ideas. Yolanda was instrumental in the design, as well as made the border for, the Icelandic block which is part of the Quilt of Belonging. This cultural work of art has travelled around the world and is permanently displayed at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. Yolanda loved to see new places and meet people and was able to travel with Larry to many parts of Canada, U.S. and Iceland. While in Iceland in 2004, she suffered a severe stroke. After being stabilized there, she was flown in a medical plane back to Canada where she received rehabilitation in Saskatoon and was able to return home after a couple months. At home, Larry continued with her rehabilitation to regain her ability to walk and the use of her hands. She became a resident of the Foam Lake Jubilee Home during the summer of 2011 where she received wonderful care from the staff and up until recently engaged in witty and humorous conversations with her caregivers.
