What a shocker! I only just learned of the passing of one of my favourite United College classmates. While we had not maintained contact following graduation in 1964, I often thought of Bill, and of our greatest accomplishment as a student politicians in the 1963-64 school year. He and I, as Senior Stick and University of Manitoba Student Union Representative (or UMSU Rep), spearheaded a successful campaign which saw the United College Student Association (UCSA) secede from UMSU. Ill always remember our debrief meeting with UC Principal, Dr Wilf Lockhart. We told him, as only cocky 20-21 year olds can, that we had made the UCSA independent of UMSU. Now he had to do the same for the college, make it an independent university. Dr Lockhart replied that he was working on it. UC became the independent University of Winnipeg on 1 July 1967. I like to think that Bill Currys quiet, confident leadership as Senior Stick helped show the way. He was a neat guy, who must be greatly missed by his community and family, to whom I can only offer my sincere condolences.
