Obituary
HENRY ANTHONY JOHN MAMER of Wynyard, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Monday, September 24, 2018, just three days short of his 79th birthday. Henry was born in Lake Lenore, SK on September 27, 1939 to Anthony and Melinda Mamer (nee Brinkman). He was the oldest of 8 children. Henry attended schooling up to grade 10 in Lake Lenore and completed grades 11 and 12 at St. Peter’s in Muenster. After various jobs, he completed Teachers’ College in 1961. He began his teaching career at Halycry School and then Verdant Valley, another school in the Canora School Unit. He resumed his friendship with former teachers’ college classmate, Nestor Prystay, and through Nestor he met the love of his life, Marlene Rudnitski, a cousin of Nestor. In 1964 Henry moved to Gordon’s Reserve to teach. In September 1965 he moved to teach at Muskowekwan Residential School. Henry and Marlene celebrated their love in marriage on November 20, 1965, in Buchanan, SK. Their daughter, Brenda, was born in 1967, and son, Darren in 1969, both in Lestock, SK. Their daughter, Donette was born in 1973, in Wynyard, SK where they had moved in 1971 for Henry’s employment with Indian Affairs as an education counsellor and resided until the present. Henry had many passions in life, the foremost being his family. Marlene was by his side in many events and activities he attended. He supported his family in their schooling, sport and extracurricular, and modeled a deep love of faith. Each of his children and grandchildren brought the purest form of joy Henry would experience. Extended family was also a significant part of Henry’s life. Henry and Marlene aimed to attend every family function possible, and instilled this importance of family in their children. Henry loved the outdoors and took pride in his lawn and gardening skills. He enjoyed travel as well as time spent at Fishing Lake, where he loved to catch a fish or two. He was the life of a game of 3-Spot and shone his skills in the game of crib. No calculator could compute faster than Henry’s own mind. He had a memory for history like no other, and kept up on community and world news through daily reading. He was an active member of the community, playing leadership roles and serving on numerous committees to his very last day, and never hesitated to lend a hand to family, neighbours, and friends. Henry was a respected principal and teacher, and a most sociable man, loving to strike up conversation with any and all. Henry was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Melinda, stepmother Rita, in-laws Mike and Lena Rudnitski, and brother-in-law Clem Bosch. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Marlene; daughter Brenda – Jonelle; son Darren (Tracy) – Jordan, Emily and Ethan; and daughter Donette (Jason) – Carter; sister Joan Bosch; brothers Bernard (Eveline), Lorne (Francoise), Jim (Doris), Paul (Marilyn), Daniel (Shirley); sister Bernadette (Kevin); in-laws Don (Sharon), Eileen (Lorne), and Fedor (Teresia); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
