(Albert) William Shipman was born on August 21, 1920 on the farm home quarter, NE ¼ 30-30-18 W2nd in the Copeland District. He was the 7th of the 8 children born to Thomas and Jean Shipman. His parents were pioneers who immigrated from England. His mother was originally from Scotland. William attended Copeland School and liked to sing at the Christmas concerts and attended Anglican Sunday school with perfect attendance. After the death of his father in 1941, he worked on the farm. In 1950, after the death of his mother, he inherited the farm. William met his future wife, Jeanne Kowbel, while she was teaching at Copeland School. They were married on October 19, 1953 and farmed together on the home farm. They were blessed with four children, Richard, Brenda, Lawrence, and Arlene. William was an active member of the Copeland community throughout his life. He participated in the building of the Copeland hall and curling rink, helped neighbors with butchering, animal health needs, and often took on the role of veterinarian. William loved sports; he played hockey, was a very skillful ballplayer, and an avid curler. He was a keen fisherman, and loved to sing. His mother-in-law commented that William sang like Perry Como. He liked to be part of a sing-a-long. He often played guitar, loved dancing, socializing and story telling. In the winters of 1962 & 1963, William went to work in a lumber camp near Valemont, B.C. It was a new experience. He often reminisced about rolling logs, sharing a bunkhouse, and the very deep snow falls. In 1968, William rented out the farmland to a good friend. He then began a 23 year career as a weed control officer for the R.M. of Big Quill. He covered 7 municipalities and met many new people. He learned of numerous back roads and short cuts. When going on a family drive, he would often say to his children, “bet you don’t know where you are”. William & Jeanne enjoyed travelling and on their 25th wedding anniversary they went to Scotland. Other destinations included, Hansen Lake Road, Manitoba, various destinations in Alberta and B.C, Iqaluit, and he drove to the Yukon several times. In 2003, William and Jeanne retired and moved into Raymore. William enjoyed taking part in the community activities and attending curling and hockey games. He sang in the senior citizens choir, called bingo numbers at Silver Heights, and was a fixture around town walking his dog Bonzo. William passed away peacefully on February 11, 2016 at St. Joseph’s in Lestock. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Jeanne; son, Richard (Carol); daughter, Brenda (Brian) Gadsby; son, Lawrence (Suzanne); daughter, Arlene (William) Gliddon; grandchildren, Patrick Shipman, Curtis (Jennifer) Shipman, Tanya Gadsby (Cam), Kylie Gadsby (Travis), Lance Gadsby, Desmond (Billie-Jo) Shipman, Larissa (Lazslo) Horvath, Darren (Shawn) Shipman,Lesley Shipman (Chris), Sheri (Greg) Madsen, Bradley (Gabrielle) Gliddon; great-grandchildren; Anthony Shipman, Rylee Shipman, Maddex Shipman, Ayla Shipman, Arielle Horvath, Taryn Horvath, Kaitlyn Madsen, Jeffrey Madsen, Kyle Madsen, Savanah Gliddon.
