Obituary
Elsie passed away peacefully at her Golden Acres home on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at the age of 96. Elsie (Morari) Sather was born on the family farm near Calder, SK on June 28, 1923, the fifth of nine children, to Wasyl and Maria (Calancia) Morari. She received her education at Minerva country school and then, wishing to become a teacher, headed off to Normal School in Moose Jaw. This was 1941 and many young men were called to fight in WWII, so after only one year of training Elsie found herself teaching a multi-grade classroom at Big Quill School in the Kandahar district. There she met the love of her life, Gordon Sather. They were married on the family farm on October 20, 1946. Together they raised their family, Linda and Leslie, and became an integral part of the community. They were active in the Aarnes Lutheran Church and enjoyed curling, square dancing and evenings of card games with friends. Elsie enjoyed cooking wholesome meals, gardening, and handwork that included sewing, cross-stitch and her all-time favorite, knitting. When Gordon passed away in 1986, Elsie moved to town and lived independently there, first in an apartment on Little Quill and then at Maple Grove, until the summer of 2019, when she transitioned to the Wynyard Golden Acres care home. Wherever she lived, she quickly got to know her neighbors and was often on the lookout for a good game of scrabble or bridge. She volunteered at Golden Acres and was an active member of the Lutheran church. Elsie was always on the go, walking wherever possible and attending aerobic classes well into her 80s. Even as a Golden Acres resident, she became known for her daily “laps” in the hallways. All her life, Elsie could be found following the interests and activities of her family. With her own children, it was music, oratory, church activities and school sports. As grandchildren began to arrive, she sported the license plate Nana 7. She never missed a music recital, be it piano, band or choir. Her sports interests expanded to include basketball, football, hockey, TaeKwonDo, soccer, track and cross country. Her apartment was the after school drop-in spot for grandchildren and their friends, where they could count on everything from sweet treats to full-course meals. More recently, having 14 great-grandchildren growing up nearby, her interests expanded to include gymnastics, dance, 4-H events, drama productions, guitar & vocal recitals. Nana was so proud of all her family! Elsie was also instrumental in helping her children and grandchildren maintain their homes, yards and gardens. She was an unstoppable berry picker and never left town without her hoe and trusty hand-tool in the trunk of her car, should there be a weed that dare escape her scrutiny. It pleased her to no end when granddaughter Megan and family decided to build in the old yard where she and Gordon lived for so many years. If there was a painting job to be done, inside or out, on her knees or high up on a scaffold, she was game for it and very fussy about the details. She not only passed down traditional recipes, but preferred to oversee the production while each protege learned the technique. As her mobility gradually declined, she still enjoyed watching curling on TV, visiting with family and friends on the phone and, her mainstay, knitting gifts for others. Elsie was predeceased by sisters Verna, Dorothy & Rose and brothers John, Peter, George & Stefan; brothers-in-law Richard Dickson, Stewart Reid and Alfred Egilsson and sisters-in-law Irene Morari and Kay Morari.
